1. Sammlungsgeschichte
Die Sammlung umfasst Kopien aus amerikanischen Beständen unterschiedlicher Provenienz, u. a. dem Amt für strategische Dienste/Mission für Deutschland der US-Truppen auf dem europäischen Kriegsschauplatz, dem Alliierten Operation und Besatzung Hauptquartier Zweiter Weltkrieg, im großem Umfang vom Amt der militärischen Regierung über Deutschland, der Allierten Kommandantur und dem Generaladjutant.
History of the collection
The files hold copies of American holdings from different origins, among other things of the Office of Strategic Services/Mission for Germany U.S Forces European Theater, of the Allied Operational and Occupation Headquarters World War II, in a great extent of the Office of Military Government for Germany (OMGUS), of the Allied Kommandatura Berlin and the Adjutant General.
2.Bestandsbeschreibung
Der Bestand umfasst 296 Akten (6,15 lfm) mit der Laufzeit 1941 - 1951 (1981).
Der Bestand enthält u.a. das Handbuch der deutschen Verwaltungspersönlichkeiten, Informationen über Kriegsschutzmaßnahmen, Bombenschäden, Lebensstil im totalen Krieg, Verkehrs- und Nachschubsituation und Vorschläge über die Besetzung Deutschlands. Des Weiteren eine Übersicht über die Organisation des U.S. Hauptquartiers in Dahlem, des U.S. Hauptquartiers Berlin Distrikt in Lichterfelde und der Alliierten Kommandantur. Ebenfalls enthalten sind Verhandlungen mit der sowjetischen Militäradministration über den Status von Berlin, Informationen über die Magistratsverwaltung und Gesundheits-, Ernährungs-, Verkehrs- und Versorgungsprobleme. Außerdem Entnazifizierungsangelegenheiten, Vereinigung von KPD und SPD zur SED und die Berlin-Krise 1948/49.
Interviews mit OMGUS/OMGBS-Beamten, amerikanischen Politikern und Militärs wie Henry C. Alter, Carl und Margret Anthon, John H. Backer, John Bitter, Seymour R. Bolton, Nelson C. Chipchin, William H. Draper, Eleanor Dulles, Gordon A. Ewing, William F. Heimlich, Perry Laukhuff, Cecil B. Lyon, Louis A. Mark, Karl F. Mautner, James W. Riddleberger, Leon J. Steck, Maxwell D. Taylor, Richard W. Van Wagenen, Michael Weyl und Louis A. Wiener runden den Bestand ab.
Der Bestand wurde von 1977 bis 1981 von Dr. Jürgen Wetzel in den National Archives in Washington, gesichtet und Kopien angefertigt. Der Bestand liegt in Form von Kopien und Mikrofilmen vor. Für die laufenden Nummern/Signaturen 260 - 290 liegen nur Mikrofilme vor.
Die Zeitzeugeninterviews unterliegen bis auf wenige Ausnahmen keinen rechtlichen Nutzungsbeschränkungen. Die Interviews die nicht als uneingeschränkt nutzbar gekennzeichnet sind, unterliegen einer personenbezogenen Schutzfrist und sind erst nach Ablauf dieser Frist benutzbar.
Akten mit einer Laufzeit zwischen 1933 und 1944 der Systematikgruppe "04.01. Untersuchung zur strategischen Bombardierung (Strategic Bombing Survey)" sind teilweise Sammlungen, welche die Allierten Behörden mit Unterlagen aus der Berliner Verwaltungsbehörden erstellt haben und enthalten keine Unterlagen der Allierten Behörden selbst. Diese sind durch den Zusatz "Sammlung" im Aktentitel gekennzeichnet.
Das vorliegende Findbuch wurde im Oktober 2013 bis März 2014 von Jennifer Grüntjens im Rahmen der Ausbildung zur Archivinspektoranwärterin retrokonvertiert.
Der Bestand ist über die Findmittel: Datenbank und Findbuch nutzbar.

Einige Akten sind auf Grund archivgesetzlicher Bestimmungen nach § 9 Archivgesetz Berlin (ArchGB) vom 14. März 2016 für die Benutzung befristet gesperrt. Nach § 9 Abs. 4 ArchGB kann eine Verkürzung der Schutzfristen auf Antrag erfolgen. Dazu bedarf es der besonderen Zustimmung des Landesarchivs Berlin.
History of the holding
The holding comprises 296 files (6,15 running meters/linear meters) with the running-time 1941-1951 (1981).
The holding contains among other things the handbook of German administration personalities, informations about war precautions, air-raid damage, and lifestyle in the total war, traffic and supply situation and suggestions about the occupation of Germany. Furthermore it holds an overview about the organization of the U.S. Headquarters in Dahlem, the U.S. Headquarters Berlin District in Lichterfelde and the Allied Kommandantura. Even so it includes the negotiations with the Soviets over the status of Berlin, informations about the administration of the magistrate and health-, nutrition-, traffic- and supply problems. Moreover denazification matters, unification of KPD and SPD to SED and the Berlin-Crisis 1948/49.
Interviews with OMGUS/OMGBS-Officials, American politicians and military such as Henry C. Alter, Carl und Margret Anthon, John H. Backer, John Bitter, Seymour R. Bolton, Nelson C. Chipchin, William H. Draper, Eleanor Dulles, Gordon A. Ewing, William F. Heimlich, Perry Laukhuff, Cecil B. Lyon, Louis A. Mark, Karl F. Mautner, James W. Riddleberger, Leon J. Steck, Maxwell D. Taylor, Richard W. Van Wagenen, Michael Weyl and Louis A. Wiener round of the holding.
The holding has been evaluated and copies have been made by Dr. Jürgen Wetzel in the National Archives in Washington from 1977 to 1981. The holding is partly usable through microfilm or microfiche, also the numbers 260-296 are only accessable through microfilm.
The oral history interviews are apart from a few exceptions unreservedly usabel. The interviews which are not labelled as "usabel without restrictions" are subject to individual-related terms of protection.
Files with a duration between 1933 and 1944 belonging to the classification "04.01. Untersuchung zur strategischen Bombardierung (Strategic Bombing Survey)" are partly collections, which were created by the Allied authorities. They contain documents from the Berlin district offices and not the Allied authorities themselve. The titel of these files contains the addition "collcection".
The present Findbuch has been retro converted by Jennifer Grüntjens during her training to Archivinspektor-Anwärterin from October 2013 until March 2014.
It can be used over the data base and the Findbuch.

Some files are temporarily inaccessible because of the archive regulations by law under § 9 Archivgesetz Berlin (ArchGB) of the 14th of March 2016. Whereas § 9 Abs. 4 ArchGB gives the possibility to file an application for earlier use. For this, the particular agreement of the Ladesarchiv Berlin is needed.
