Bruststück vor einem Nachthimmel mit Sternen und Mond, nach links gewandt, den Kopf im Dreiviertelprofil, Blick angehoben, mit nach hinten gekämmtem, nackenlangem Haar, Warze auf der Stirn, weißem Halstuch und dunklem Mantel mit breitem Kragen. Direkt hinter dem Dargestellten Äste von emporragenden Pflanzen. Unter dem rechteckigen Bildfeld links und rechts die Künstleradressen, links mit Datierung. Unten mittig eine englische Legende mit biografischen Angaben zum Dargestellten und zum Bild: "The background represents part of the constellation of Gemini, with a telscopic aspect of the Georgium Sidus, as it was discovered by Dr. Herschell at Bath, | the 13.th of March 1781, in consequence of which he was soon after introduced to the most gracious patronage of His Majesty King George III.", sowie einer Widmung des Zeichners der Vorlage: "Dedicated to the R.t Hon.ble Sir Joseph Banks, Bar.t Vrse.dr of the Royal Society, | by his very respectful and obedient Servant, Frederick Rehberg, Member of the Royal Academy of the fine Arts at Berlin &&".
Bemerkung: Auf der Rückseite handschriftlich mit Bleistift: "died 25 Aug.t 1822 | in his 84year".; Das Blatt ist beschnitten.; Im "Einlauf-Buch der Porträt-Sammlung N° 1-3531" unter "Gekauft" die Angabe "Auer Dult ?" für 0,50 Mark.

Maler, Lithograph, Radierer und Kunstschriftsteller englischer Naturforscher u.Botaniker; nahm zs. mit dem Botaniker Daniel Solander an der 1. Weltumsegelung von James Cook (1768-1771) teil früherer off. Name: "laut der [Gründungs]Verordnung von 1747 wurde sie Kaiserliche Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künste in Sankt-Petersburg" bezeichnet
