Text: Im Jahre 1214 wird Hof das erste Mal urkundlich erwähnt als die Siedlung "Rekkenze". Bereits 1230 begannen Planungen u. Ausbau der "Neuen Stadt zu Hoff". Erst gehörte es den Herzögen von Meranien u. Grafen von Andechs, 1248 ging es an die Vögte von Weida über. Diese verkauften die Stadt 1373 an die Burggrafen von Hohenzollern-Nürnberg. Im Jahre 1385 wurde sie zu einer der vier Hauptstädte des Fürstentums "oberhalb des Gebürgs" erklärt. 1792 ist Hof dem Königreich Preußen u. 1806 dem Kaiserreich Napoleons einverleibt worden. 1810 kam es schließlich zum Königreich Bayern. Verschiedene Flächenbrände (1299, 1690, 1743, 1823) haben der Stadt mehr geschadet als die vielen Kriegswirrnisse. Der letzten Brandkatastrophe von 1823 fielen fast 9/10 aller Baulichkeiten zum Opfer. Bedeutsam für die Stadt war 1848 die Eröffnung der Eisenbahnlinien Neumarkt-Hof u. Hof-Plauen
