Das Grutamt wurde durch zwei Gruetherren ("Grüther") verwaltetet. Mit Grut (auch Gruet oder Gruit) ist eine in ihrer Zusammensetzung variable Kräutermischung, die zum Würzen von Bier eingesetzt wird. In Münster war die Abgabe der Würze ein Monopol, das die Stadt 1265 vom Bischof ankaufte (vgl. LAV NRW Abteilung W, Bestand: Domkapitel Münster, Domkellnerei, Uk. 2) und so ertragreich wurde, dass sich das „Gruetamt“ zur städtischen Schuldenverwaltung und Bank entwickelte. In der Frühen Neuzeit ist es somit eine der wichtigsten Einrichtung der Stadt dar, das die gewöhnlichen (Akzisen) und außergewöhnlichen (extraordinäre) Einnahmen und viele Ausgaben v.a. für die Gehälter ("Salarien") der städtischen Ämter und für die Rentzahlungen verwaltet.

When a claim is entered into the BZK, a number is assigned for unique identification. This BZK number refers to a compensation claim, not to a person. If a person has made several claims (e.g. for themselves and for relatives), each claim generally has its own BZK number. Often, the file number of the respective compensation authority is used as the BZK number.
