Bestandsbeschreibung: Die Birlenbacher Hütte in Geisweid feierte im Jahr 1904 ihr 400-jähriges Bestehen. Als ”die Hütte zu Birlenbach“ wird sie erstmals im Jahre 1504 in der Dillenburg-Siegenschen Renterei-Rechnung als ”hoher Ofen“ namentlich aufgeführt. Tatsächlich besteht Sie seit 1463 und war bis 1971 im Betrieb. Die Birlenbacher Hütte war eine der ”klassischen“ Erzeugungsstätten für kalterblasenes Siegerländer Spezialroheisen. Die Kleinhütten nahmen eine Sonderstellung in der Gesamtentwicklung der eisenschaffenden Industrie im Siegerland ein. Mit ihren kleinen Hochöfen waren sie in der Lage, ein kalterblasenes Spezialroheisen herzustellen, welches in der Menge und Qualität den Wünschen der Maschinen- und Motorenbaufirmen entsprach. Im Bestand 510 des Stadtarchivs sind 140 Verzeichnungseinheiten mit einer Laufzeit von 1771-1947 über die Birlenbacher Hütte gelistet.
