Geschichte des Bestandsbildners: Das holsteinische Gut Oppendorf liegt östlich von Kiel und gehörte folglich zum Kieler Güterdistrikt. Zum Gut sind neben dem Haupthof das Dorf Flüggendorf, die Oppendorfer Mühle und das spätere Wasserwerk Dietrichsdorf zu rechnen. 1616 kaufte Dietrich von Blome auf Oppendorf das Gut Schönhorst und vereinigte die beiden Güter. 1722 gelangten sie in den Besitz der Familie Rantzau und blieben als Gräflich Rantzau-Oppendorfer Fideikommiss verbunden.
Bestandsgeschichte: 1923 nahm Graf Heinrich zu Rantzau mit dem damaligen Staatsarchiv Kiel Verhandlungen zur endgültigen Übergabe des bereits mehr als zehn Jahre lang dort verwahrten Oppendorfer Gutsarchivs auf, das letztlich 1931 vollständig als Eigentum an das Staatsarchiv übergegangen war.
