Die Aufgaben der Justizvollzugsanstalten ergeben sich im Wesentlichen aus dem Strafvollzugsgesetz vom 16. März 1976. In den Justizvollzugsanstalten werden Freiheitsstrafen, Jugendstrafen, Untersuchungshaft sowie Ordnungs-, Sicherungs- und Zwangs- und Erzwingungshaft vollzogen.
