The Hof City Archive offers you: a library with over 20,000 volumes from the 15th century to the present day, the newspapers from Hof and the surrounding area since 1783, a continuous city chronicle, a thematically arranged collection of newspaper clippings and a biographical collection on more than 2. 000 people, documents from the Middle Ages and early modern times, records of the city of Hof, the foundations it administers and its businesses as well as companies, individuals, families and associations, the minutes of the city council, budgets and accounts of the city and its foundations, family records from the residents' and registry offices since 1876, extensive collections of maps, plans, posters, pamphlets, coins, films and much more, as well as a photo archive with around 100,000 photographs. The holdings of the city archive relate primarily to the city of Hof, but also partly to the nearer and wider surroundings.

Almost all the holdings of the City Archives have now been well indexed with "finding aids". If you have an Internet connection, we recommend that you visit the website www.stadtarchiv-hof.de in preparation for a visit to the archive. Under the heading "Online finding aids" you can browse through the directories. The website also provides information, for example, about documents for family researchers, gives tips for excursions on the history of the region and provides materials for school lessons. You can also find user and fee statutes and a user application there.

The catalog of the archive library is maintained by EDP as part of the Bavarian Union Catalog. The easiest way to search the catalog is via the internet address TouchPoint, the OPAC of the FH Hof.

The use of the municipal archives is free of charge. Fees are only charged for written requests for family research and for special services such as the production of photocopies or photo reproductions or transcripts. Associations, companies and private individuals can seek advice from the City Archives on the arrangement, storage and indexing of their old records. It is also possible to deposit your documents in the city archives. Talk to us if you have questions about the storage of historically valuable documents.

As a gift for birthdays and anniversaries you can buy copies of old newspapers. We ask that you make an appointment, because this requires the use of a "readerprinter".

The Municipal Archives are open Tuesdays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and Mondays and Thursdays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and by appointment. It is best to call before visiting to make an appointment.
