As the memory of the city of Mainz, the city archive secures and indexes all important documents on the history of Mainz. From medieval parchment documents to digital data carriers, the archive preserves the entire range of historical sources.

The town archive consists of the final archive, the building file archive and the administrative archive (intermediate archive). In total, it currently holds about 7 500 running metres of records. of archival, written and collection material.

The Stadtarchiv Hof was set up in 1931, initially under the part-time management of a historian with a doctorate, who worked full-time as a teacher of religion. In the course of the following decades, the business expanded and became more professional. At present the archive employs four staff members, two of whom are professional archivists in the higher or middle archive service.
